First People's Buffalo Jump - Ulm, MT - MT State Park

The Native Americans would work a herd of 75-100 buffalo to go up on top of the hill, the edge of which you see in the right corner.

Then they would get them to stampede, running at 30-35 mph, and off they'd go over the escarpment to their death. The Indians would harvest the meat, hides, horns, hooves.

They have discovered 13-15 ft beds of bones in the areas around the jump which was in use from about 900 AD to 1500 AD.

No buffalo, but there is wildlife here. Marmot, I think.

Lots of Prairie Dogs. A virtual city. Buffalo like to roll around in the dirt of the Prairie Dogs' mound for mite control.

The Prairie Dogs like the blue grass in the area.

The white dot in the middle is a tipi. You can't see in this version, but there are 2 smaller dots on the path leading out from the tipi. Humans walking up to the top of the jump. I could hear them loud and clear, talking!
