First People's Buffalo Jump - Ulm, MT - MT State Park
The Native Americans would work a herd of 75-100 buffalo to go up on top of the hill, the edge of which you see in the right corner. |
Then they would get them to stampede, running at 30-35 mph, and off they'd go over the escarpment to their death. The Indians would harvest the meat, hides, horns, hooves. |
They have discovered 13-15 ft beds of bones in the areas around the jump which was in use from about 900 AD to 1500 AD. |
No buffalo, but there is wildlife here. Marmot, I think. |
Rabbit. |
Lots of Prairie Dogs. A virtual city. Buffalo like to roll around in the dirt of the Prairie Dogs' mound for mite control. |
The Prairie Dogs like the blue grass in the area. |
