Collins Sanctuary

Planting a grove of trees (and more!) in honor of MHG with the Friends of Trees at the Collins Sanctuary during their annual gift tree planting. There were about 8 teams of planters; each team had a leader; each team was assigned a certain types of trees and specific number to plant.

Our team had Western Red Cedar (25) and Vine Maple (35) for a total of 60 trees. All the trees were in 1 gallon pots. The Friends volunteers had already prepared the area by staking out where the trees were to be planted. Stakes were color coded for our specific type of tree.

So we looked for pink/purple stakes for the cedar and green for the vine maple. There were about 12 in our team. Weather was perfect, in the 40s, dry, partly cloudy. We arrived early enough to partake of the Voodoo donuts and Grand Central Bakery goods, coffee, clementines.
They provided the shovels, and gloves. Started with a little ceremony and then off to plant with our leader who was there to show us how to plant, what to plant, where to plant. Then we, and all the other teams, were off and running. We got done about 10:30 am. In all, they planted about 500 trees today.
